Pucker up Ladies! You’ve got some lip lockin’ to do this Christmas!

It’s that time of year, when we all put on our LBD (Little Black Dress) and go to holiday parties! Jazz up your simple, LBD with some sparkle and pearl accessories. Top this classy look off with some pouty red lips! This is a sure way to grab some attention, and of course steal a smooch from that certain hottie.

To get your lips perky and plump, try out this awesome lip plumper, Lip Injection by Too Faced. Start with a lip moisturizer, and then glide on your plumper. Finish the look with your favorite bright, red lipstick and seal it with a gloss.

Lip plumpers usually last a couple hours and can come off while you are sipping your cocktail, so…

For a longer-lasting pouty look, try a dermal filler like Restylane or Juvederm. These will last up to a few months. Be sure to consult with your doctor to find which is best for you.

None of these options are permanent, Ladies… but they will do the trick and land you that kiss!

Have a trip coming up? Plane, train, or automobile – make sure you arrive in style! All it takes is a few minutes to look great when you get to your final destination.

To keep your face feeling refreshed in all transportation situations, make sure bring along a Mineral Water Spray. Evian makes a 1.7oz Facial Mist Spray perfect for your carry-on!

Transit can be stuffy with minimal air circulation – which is not great for your skin…

When you arrive at your destination (or just before) find a restroom and freshen up! Here’s what you’ll need:

1) Facial Cleanser & Wash Cloth – Try SkinMedica’s Facial Cleanser. It is gentle for all skin types and will leave your skin hydrated and refreshed.

2) Tinted Moisturizer – Traveling during the winter can be very dry on your skin. Try a tinted moisturizer to keep your skin looking polished but with a warm glow. Check out Primed and Poreless Bronzed Tint by Too Faced. This product also has SPF 20 so you will be protected from the sun if you are traveling some place warm!

3) Mascara & Lip Gloss – This will polish off your look! Check out Lashlight for thick, long, conditioned lashes and Glamour Gloss for super shine and natural plump action.

Don’t forget your shades as back-up plan! I never leave home without mine!

Med Spas are the secret to celebrity skin – they truly are Hollywood’s fountain of youth! Here are ten of our top tricks used at my medical spa, Beauty Park, to keep our patients’ skin looking flawless.

Celebrities use an arsenal of cosmetic lasers to repair damage and flaws on the skin’s surface and rejuvenate collagen to keep skin firm and tight.

Lasers for Skin Resurfacing
The newer lasers can resurface skin with very little downtime – which is pretty important to celebrity clients. The laser I use for resurfacing, the Pixel, fires these little grids into the skin causing “micro-injuries.” As skin heals the collagen is rejuvenated, the tissue firms up, and the texture is improved. It’s fantastic, you can actually watch as the skin tightens up. Sometimes I do one and it is great!

www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GvzKSyzoMs

Today for my regular EXTRA TV “Roadtest” blog we are doing a special ‘man edition” episode. We’ll be looking at beauty products – I mean “grooming products” - especially for men, because everyone wants to look their best! Shave oils are one of my favorite grooming secrets for men. I’m going to show you my favorite ones, a couple of tips on how to use them properly, and then I’ll reveal a great budget trick.

A lot of people haven’t even heard of them, but plant oils have been used as a shaving aid since shaving began. They are usually a plant-based oil or blend of vegetable and essential oils used in conjunction with shave creme, soap or gel. Instead, I like to use as a stand alone oil shave lubricant, because it has a greater razor glide-enabling property. They are better at that than a soap or a foam, because they have more air in them, so they have more direct contact with the skin. This causes less traction as you scrape a razor over your face. The oils have more moisturizing effects and shave oils can also be made without all those potentially toxic chemical ingredients found in a lot of the foams.

Most importantly to some guys is that you can see exactly where you are shaving. This is great for men who wear a stylized beard or mustache, and for men who shave their heads completely. Shave oils allow them a closer shave along and condition the scalp, helping to prevent dryness and flaking.

So, let’s look at a couple options!

The REN Tamanu High Glide Shaving Oil ($28.00). This stuff is great. It’s a little pricey at $28, but primary ingredients are sesame oil and coconut oil and Tamanu Oil which gives this almost imperceptible spicy scent to it, and it feels really satiny. You only need a little bit so this bottle will last you about two months. This is a great choice if you have really sensitive skin.

Pacific Shave Oil ($6.95 )
Check out this bottle – this is the ultimate in low maintenance and portability. It will last you about 100 shaves, it contains certified organic ingredients, and they plant a tree for every bottle you buy! You can even email them and tell them where you want them to plant it!

And how to use them?

It’s best to shave after your shower because the steam and heat will open the pores causing the follicles to sort of stand up straighter and also the skin to be more hydrated. Apply a light coat of oil to the face and then you should only need a little bit of water. Also apply a light oil to allow the razor to glide over the skin, and do make sure you’ve exfoliated beforehand. A straight razor would be ideal – but it’s probably best to leave that to a professional – second best is a double edged razor. And shave with the grain, you never want to shave against as it can irritate the skin and even cause folliculitis.

Ok, and now the big reveal - the Nurse Jamie Budget Shaving Tip!

The most important part of using the oil shave products is - oil – so you can even use olive oil. Maybe that’s not ideal to keep in your medicine cabinet – so I suggest using baby oil. If you want to tailor the smell to be a little more elegant or individual, pick up unscented baby oil bottle at any drugstore for $5.79 and add a few drops of essential oil – like a musk or a eucalyptus - my favorite - and voila! You have a great budget shave oil product for next to nothing.

Ok so here’s what we learned today. If you want a closer, cleaner shave try one of the shave oils we talked about. REN is a fantastic product if you don’t mind the price. Pacific is a great choice if you are a man-on-the-go. And if you want to get creative - customize your own shave oil with your favorite essential oil and baby oil from your very own medicine cabinet!

Until next time, stay handsome!

Have you ever seen a star on the Red Carpet without lipstick? I don’t think so – it’s like a painting half finished, you just don’t see it. So, what’s new with this classic trend? Well, I’ve got a few things to show you. And then I’m going to share a fun little budget trick that will help you get every last drop out of your very favorite tube!

To start on Today’s EXTRA Roadtest we look at my favorite picks for organic and anti-aging lipsticks. Then I’m going to show you a lipstick so cute you won’t even want to use it.

My Organic Pick – this is such a good idea because the average woman eats 4 to 9 pounds of lipstick in her lifetime. That’s somewhere between 481 and 1083 tubes! (I hardly ever go out without lipstick so I’m probably up a quart… maybe at an even thousand… definitely up to a dozen since breakfast. Organic lipsticks are a little bit of a challenge to make because they are usually made of natural oils and butters – but this also means that colors tend to fade faster and you have to re-apply organic lipstick more often. That being said, my pick is Josie Maran’s which are great because they actually have a rich color that stays on really well – check out Rumi Joon ($20.00) to start.

Anti-aging lipsticks are really hot right now – there are a slew on the market, but remember the FDA does not have to approve the claims of anti-aging makeup products. Makeup is not a food or a drug – so basically most of these “anti aging” lipsticks are lipsticks loaded with extra moisturizing ingredients, plumping or antioxidants and vitamins. Hyaluronic acid is a megamoisturizer some of these use. My favorite is surprisingly affordable – it’s L’Oreal’s Colouriche with anti-aging serum at $11.99. It has collagen, an anti-aging serum and just really rich color. I love the way it smells too.

And my pick for a lipstick that is well, just plain - Fun!
Even though it was designed for fall 2010 I can’t help showing it off - check this out - limited edition cat-shaped lipstick by Paul & Joe! It’s $25.00 and it comes in 3 shades of pink. The color is pretty sheer and has some sparkle to it and look you can use his ears to line your lips! You can get them online or pick them up at Urban Outfitters.

Of course, we never forget to include our special budget tip for the DIY set, so here we go.

Lipstick can be expensive and it seems that half of it is left in the bottom of the tube. And doesn’t it always seem that as soon as you find the perfect shade, it gets discontinued! Here’s a great little project that solves both those problems.

You need a pill case – you can get these at pretty much any drugstore. Then you just take the ends of the lipsticks, smash them in the bottom of the pill case and add a little petroleum jelly of Aquaphor, microwave ‘em for just a few seconds – you don’t want them to go nuclear.
And there you go – a custom money-saving lipstick set filled with your very favorite shades!

So, there you go – some new ideas on a classic staple. Go green and try a lipstick so healthy you could actually eat it. You can’t go wrong with Josie Maran’s line. For a super hydrating anti-aging lipstick at $11.99 you can try out all of the great color’s from L’oreal’s Colouriche with the anti-aging serum. And if you want a really fun lipstick that will put a smile on those gorgeous lips – try the limited edition cat color by Paul & Joe’s.

I’m Nurse Jamie, remember to stay beautiful.

I’m Nurse Jamie, EXTRA Lifechanger and aesthetics nurse specialist. At my spa, Beauty Park, I keep some of Hollywood’s most elite looking picture perfect. In each of my videos, I’m working with EXTRA roadtesting the latest and greatest in beauty to keep you ready for your close up!

In every make up artist’s kit you’ll find an eyelash curler – make up artists know that curling lashes will make the eye look bigger and make sparse lashes look like a fuller, healthier fringe. A good lash curler will grab all the lashes at once, without pinching and getting caught. That can break delicate lashes, and you want to keep each and every one of those beauties!

Do you need the $20 curler – one that’s plastic or even heated? In this EXTRA Roadtest we’re getting to the bottom of those questions. I’m going to let you know which ones are worth it – show you the right way to give them that perky sweep and some great budget tips.

Let’s take a look at my favorites - the Shu uemera, Tweezerman, Tarte, Sephora heated, Japonesque Go Curl Pocket Curler and HotLashes.

The Shu uemera curler for $19.00 – this is a big beauty editor pick – and a favorite among make up artists. It is for good reason – it has a wide long opening and has some magic way of making your lashes curl and behave all day. I really can’t explain it, but it’s kind of addictive and it’s a shame because it doesn’t have replacement pads and it’s no longer going to be sold in the states. So snap this guy up if you can find one!

Tweezerman goes for $12.99 – For your basic lash curler you really can’t go wrong with this and you can get at pretty much any drugstore. It’s $12.99 so it’s not as cheap as say your…

$5.00 variety curler but – cheaper drugstore brands don’t open as wide. You’re more likely to pull your lashes on the way out. And the span is smaller – leaving the lashes on the side to get pinched. Also with the super cheap ones you are more likely to get a bend or a crimp instead of the curl.

The Tweezerman won’t pinch and you can get replacement pads – and these are a light colored blue, so it makes it easy to see where your lashes are in there. The replacement pads are really easy to find. This makes a big difference because some of the higher end curlers become even more expensive when have to replace the whole thing because you can’t just switch out the pads.

Next up - the Tarte for $15.00 – I love this little guy because of the grip on this – more ergonomic and comfortable feel. It does a great job of really curling, not crimping.

Don’t forget the heat. The Sephora Heated Curler goes for $12.00– and it’s my favorite among the heated. Designed to be used after mascara application, this curler gently warms the waxes in mascara, resulting in a stronger, longer-lasting curl. This is much more gentle and you have much more control over the curl. The curl is sweeping and way more natural looking than the “vertical” 90-degree look from the metal curler. Definitely takes a little more time than the typical squeeze method though, but really fun. I love gadgets!

You may have seen the Japonesque Go Curl Pocket Curler for $10.00 – this is my favorite of the plastic lash curlers – with a long wide opening that gets every last lash. It releases easily and its totally compact to fit easily in your make up case. Great curler - travel-friendly and works like a charm.

Last but not least - Hotlashes curler for $50.00. Now I am a gadget head – so I really couldn’t resist this beauty appliance! It heats up this tourmaline crystal pad and creates an ionic flow that locks in a curl for about 18 hours - is gentler on your lashes. And the rest of the curler stays cool. How great is that?

Ok and before you run off to go get your new lash toy, here are some “How to” Tips

For the traditional lash curler you want to start with clean, dry lashes. As I mentioned, the heated combs work with the wax in the mascara. But remember, using the clamping kind with mascara will cause breakage – it’s like doing your hair after you’ve already used hairspray.

If you want the extra hold of the heated iron – use your blowdryer on a medium setting for about 10 – 15 seconds and warm the curler up. You can test it with your finger – make sure it’s not fire hot – then open wide and bring just beyond the base of your lashes. Hold for about 5 seconds and then move the curler about ¾ out and squeeze again for 2-3 seconds.

I can’t resist mentioning one last gadget… the Tweezerman Corner Lash Curler for $10.00. I don’t know what my lashes would do without it. My lashline doesn’t fit a traditional lash curler shape, so I rip mine out if try to use a regular curler for all of my lashes. This corner curler keeps my ends looking as beautifully defined as the rest of the lash line!

Finally, let’s talk today’s Super Budget Trick!

If you can’t find your eyelash curler, or you just don’t want another beauty appliance around (which I would never happen to me!) – then worry not. You have a perfectly functional eyelash curler in your kitchen already - a spoon!

I kid you not – check this out – take a regular teaspoon, or one that’s a little larger. If you have giant eyes, a ladle I guess, then hold with your thumb here and press for a few seconds. This works well because your thumb is warm and works with the soft metal edge of the spoon. Amazing!

Can you get any more budget than that I ask you?

Ok, here’s your EXTRA roadtest wrap up for lash curlers…

Shu uemera - the classic high end favorite, with good reason – a long lasting pinchless curl.

Tweezerman – a dependable, well priced curler with easy to find replacement pads.

Japonesque Plastic - if you want something you can throw in your travel bag and don’t like the scissor type handle.

The Tarte – for the ergonomic hold and good curly curl. love this great paddle handle.

Sephora heated – if you have an extra minute and you like the controlled curl.

If you want a fun beauty splurge, check out the HotLashes $50.00 - with heated silicone pads for the deluxe experience.

Now, take those perfectly curled lashes for a flirty test drive!

Till next, time, I’m Nurse Jamie. Stay beautiful.
